Want to Take Part in the Severn Project?
What is it?
The Severn Project provides and creates annual outdoor performances and events for the communities living alongside the River Severn. In 2008, we are creating two performances called Sabrina and the Engineer celebrating the River and its relationship with the Industrial Revolution. There are a number of ways you can take part, perform or help us make the event happen.
We would love to hear from people in the Bewdley and Bridgnorth areas who would like to get involved. Please see below some ways to take part.
Young People
Young People are invited to get involved in arts workshops at Bridgnorth Youth Centre, Innage Lane on 17th, 24th September and 1st October between 5.45pm and 8.30pm. If you’d like to take part all you need to do is turn up or if you’d like more information please phone Rosie Hopkins on 01746 763967.

If you are a musician or a member of a local music group, please get in touch with Alexa Mearns (Bridgnorth) on: 01746 713194 or Loz Samuels (Bewdley) on: 01562 732977 to find out how to take part.
Would you like to help us make this event happen?
In Bridgnorth and Bewdley we need people who know the towns well, are confident working with the public and free during the day of the event for training. The roles include stewarding, supporting our production teams and providing information for the public. This celebration is part of the West Midland’s open weekend celebrating the launch of the Cultural Olympiad.

2008 LEAD ARTISTS
The Severn Project has been working in collaboration with selected artists over the last year to create the 2008 programme of events and to plan the future of the project. This year’s lead artists are:
AVANTI DISPLAY
Avanti Display create street theatre with shows that combine comedy, surrealism, farce and spectacle. Utilising their skills in creative engineering and their trademark of using water in unexpected ways they produce shows with dramatic, often beautiful and comic effects. They recently developed a large scale, site specific, collaborative project, Hydromania!, for the National Theatre, Trafalgar Square and Manchester Town Hall. The company has toured the length and breadth of the U.K and Europe, appeared at festivals as far afield as Korea, Noumea and Australia and have taken part in British Council tours to Thailand and China.
PA-BOOM
Pa-Boom is a collection of artists, sculptors, designers and technicians producing work, shows and projects using the medium of sculpture and theatre animated by fire, light and pyrotechnics. Previous work in Shropshire includes the breathtaking Light Horse sculpture, created with members of the community. For the Severn Project, they are collaborating with Desperate Men to realise the climax of the 2007 events in Bridgnorth in August.
EMERGENCY EXIT ARTS
Founded in 1980, Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) is an artist-centred organisation with a creative pool of performers, musicians, designers, visual artists, pyrotechnists, puppeteers, makers, composers and inventors and is led by artistic director Deb Mullins. EEA runs a large and varied programme and has become one of the UK's leading street arts companies producing unique celebratory events and community based projects.

THE PROJECT GROUP
The Project Group is an emerging social enterprise which provides a creative, progressive and entrepreneurial environment for individuals, who are in touch with Adult Mental Health Services, to achieve to their full potential at their own pace. The Project Group are creating an installation for the performances drawing on the history of the river and the communities along its banks.

Chris has over 18 years experience with assignments ranging from documentary photography in a war-torn Bosnia to powerful films made for clients that include, the BBC, Granada Media, The Department of Health and the NHS.

Artist Brief
The project will explore obesity and the issue of healthy lifestyle, diet and body image. An holistic approach and sensitive handling of this issue will be a requirement of the project.
Due to the nature of this project, it is anticipated that movement and performance could be a preference but visual artists with specific expertise and interest are welcome to apply.
Therefore we would like to receive expressions of interest from a range of artists and performers who have the following experience and skills and a particular interest in this theme:
What we are looking for:
• Experience of Arts in Health projects preferably around issues of body image.
• Experience of leading creative workshops with young people experiencing various emotional and behavioural issues and lack of self esteem in a way which enables them to reach their potential by recognizing the value of their contribution.
• Ability to refer issues raised during the workshops to the schools involved or to the broader partnership team in a sensitive way so that people are not left vulnerable.
• Experience of working as part of a team.
• A high level of competency in own art form
• Experience of project monitoring and evaluation, by collecting evidence as to the outcomes of workshops with participants, according to health sector needs.
• Good communication skills at a variety of levels
Project aim
To use the arts to improve the wellbeing and increase the self esteem of young people identified as being at risk through obesity.
Objectives
1. To deliver integrated and inclusive activity that raises awareness of health issues related to obesity
2. To encourage participation in a range of creative arts activities that address the issue of obesity (including dance and movement) in a safe and non – competitive environment
3. To raise self esteem and increase confidence of those taking part
Background to project
This is a partnership project funded by Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust, through the Health Promotion Team and managed by the Arts Development Team. Within the Borough of Telford and Wrekin we frequently commission artists to work within communities and understand the dynamics and processes that make this a positive experience for all those involved.
Partnership working is the norm so this work will be supported by a range of professionals who will offer their expertise to the project in both the planning and delivery phases. This work will be supported by the health promotion team.
Evidence of need
In 2006 following measurements taken of reception and year six in Telford & Wrekin, a total of 514 children were classified as obese, which is 16.6% of those measured, similar to the national average of 16%. Within T&W the proportion of Year 6 boys classified as obese (22.5%), is significantly higher than the figure for girls of the same age (16.2%).
Project Target Group
Age group: Yr 6, 11 – 12 yrs
Activities
1. To offer a series of introductory creative activities, to schools (year 6) to explore the issue of healthy lifestyle with particular reference to obesity.
2. To offer regular creative opportunities as extra curricular activity in and out of school, to the target group, exploring various themes, including self esteem, through a range of art forms including dance/ movement, drama, music (singing) visual art. Some of these activities will relate to existing activities.
3. Learning mentors support vulnerable young people and we would work with this team to support the project.
4. To hold workshops focusing on decision making, and personal responsibility re healthy diet, eating habits and lifestyle including cultural activity.
5. To monitor and record both health and wellbeing before and after sessions.
6. Offer in service training for teachers and professionals working with young people so that inclusivity becomes a part of the physical activity curriculum.

Art of Life - Call for artists
WHO: Herefordshire Council Arts Service in partnership with Adult Social Care are seeking three artists from different disciplines to deliver a programme of art sessions at Canal Road Day Centre, Hereford. The artists should be experienced in working with people with learning disabilities and/or physical disabilities to plan and deliver arts sessions for the ART OF LIFE project.
WHAT: The artist’s main role is to motivate people and help them to explore how to be able to deal with change through taking part in stimulating arts activity, which also helps to increase feelings of confidence. Arts sessions will explore the themes of: Identity/Body Image, Self Esteem and Health. Sessions will start and run three times per week for a period of 12 weeks.
WHERE: Canal Road is a day centre in Hereford serving adults with physical and/or learning disabilities from across Herefordshire. Canal Road has an expansive arts room and an adjoining fully equipped woodworking room.
WHEN: Arts sessions are expected to take place between October 2008 and January 2009, with an opportunity to visit Canal Road in August and a final evaluation report and Celebration Event held in February 2009 (date TBC).
FEE: Total fee for each artist is £3650 with a further £350 (maximum amount) allocated to materials. Travel expenses and any other expenses are included in the total fee.
TO APPLY: Artists should send a C.V. including contacts for 2 referees, state availability from September 2008 – January 2009 if possible, 10 images of work including any which relate to this type of project, press releases if applicable and a short statement (max 100 words) about why they are interested in the project. Big Dance 2008 takes place from 5-13 July and celebrates an extraordinary range of dance across England.

STOKES BARN, OFF THE A458 BRIDGNORTH TO SHREWSBURY ROAD
Festival at the Edge needs volunteer stewards for this 3-day weekend event 18th - 20th July near Much Wenlock, Shropshire. This is a great opportunity to get involved in one of the best storytelling festivals in the country.
To apply simply fill out the attached application form (deadline now 1st July not June). All successful applicants will receive a ticket of entry for themselves (family/friends accompanying will need to buy their own ticket unless they apply to steward too!). Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and you will also be provided with free on-site camping, programme and site map etc. Be part of a great, friendly team and enjoy yourself. No experience necessary, all training will be given on site.
If you've never heard of a "Storytelling Festival", we have artists from all round the world attending this one, telling their stories, singing, dancing or playing music. There are many event marquees on site and a "village" of stalls selling crafts, clothing and food. People either attend on a daily basis or stay and camp on-site for the whole weekend. Showering and all the usual facilities are available.
You would need to be available or on duty for a maximum of 8 hours over the whole weekend, which means 2-4 hours each day, though some flexibility is needed (hence the application form says up to "12" hours). There's no need to be experienced, as training will be given on site.
Actual stewarding duties include directing traffic/parking, helping people find areas they want to go to (marquees/refreshments/loos), checking wristbands and helping people find seats in the marquees, looking out for safety hazards and just generally being nice and supportive to people!! We have teams of stewards, so if you're not experienced, we'd put you in a team with some experienced people and use radio contact whilst on duty. There's also a helpers' party on the Sunday evening to say thank you.
This is a great opportunity to gain some experience in the festival field (in both senses!) and enjoy yourself at the same time, so the sooner you get your form sent off, the more chance you have of being included. Good luck!

June Exhibition @ Sandford
Jenny Jones is this month’s Guest painter at Sandford Gallery. In this exhibition, Jenny’s rural colourful countryside folk and animals rub shoulders with humorous dog portrait paintings, in the style of the great masters from art history. The exhibition includes watercolours, oils and drawings. The selection reflects Jenny’s talent as a draftswoman using the surrounding flora and fauna as inspiration, especially her own disposition and reputation for rescuing and caring for injured animals and wildlife. Hens, geese, ducks, wild-birds and sheep, cats and dogs feature along side pastoral characters. Her light-hearted approach creates a gentle picture of life in the countryside. This simple handling shows her dexterity and flair for the subject. Her skill and popularity makes her currently one of the most successful Shropshire artists working today. She is very talented and very collectable.
Bishops Castle artist Alan Sidney is Sandford Gallery’s guest Ceramist throughout June. His quirky ceramic figures remind one of childhood visits to the circus or fairs with a good dollop of the fantastical. Clouds on wheels and clowns with amazing headdresses beautifully sculpted look like over the top designs from Cirque Du Soleil.
Alan studied at Liverpool School of Art in the 1960s, and worked as a book illustrator and graphic designer, before turning his talents to clay. This may explain the fantasy element of his work, which is always intriguing and even psychedelic. Working from his studio at home he regularly raiding his kitchen for objects that he can use as moulds. He also models forms directly. His works reflect his passion for architecture, machines and ancient civilizations, incorporating frogs, snakes, turtles, horses, even elephants. To Sidney it represents an enchanted world where animals live together happily, something which he contrasts with the way people live in the real world.
A new show of paintings and prints by resident gallery artists, Ros Burns, Di Purser, David Mace, Tony Purser and Steve Vicary also run along side Jenny and Alan’s work.
Sandford Gallery is Open: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday
from 11am to 5pm and is manned by the Gallery owners.

Building local voluntary and amateur arts participation
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Arts Council
England and Voluntary Arts England invite you to take part in a major national conference on local arts participation and voluntary and amateur groups.
Participation in the arts makes a powerful contribution to local communities. This year marks the introduction of National Indicator 11 on engagement in the arts and for the first time levels of arts engagement will be measured at local authority level across England.
The conference will launch landmark new research, commissioned by DCMS and Arts Council, looking in detail for the first time at the size, make-up and impact of the voluntary arts sector and its potential for growth. It will also look at the role local voluntary and amateur arts groups can play in building local arts engagement and how to create effective partnerships for delivery.

There will be a reception at the Barbican, hosted by the Carnegie (UK) Trust, on the evening of 1 July. This event will include the launch of the Voluntary Arts England publication Edutainment and all conference delegates are invited to attend.
Attendance at the conference and evening reception is free, but spaces are limited.
