House of Cards: Call for Entries

From 31 January through 29 March, the gallery at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre will be transformed into a House of Cards. The exhibition is meant to evoke the artist as card-maker with the gallery as a “hallmark” for creators to showcase cards of varying themes and media.

The exhibition comes just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mothering Sunday and Easter. Other popular themes for cards are birthday, special occasion, get-well, and “all occasion” greetings. So get creative and think outside the 2D envelope by including small items such as handcrafted jewellery, magnets, stickers, pins and charms with your cards. Design elements can be drawn, printed, painted, collaged, stamped, sewn or a mix of media.

14-16 January: Drop off cards

31 January: Exhibition opens

29 March: Exhibition closes

4 April: Pick up unsold cards

Submissions

· Participating artists can submit up to 30 cards, with 10 cards on display at a time. The displays will be replenished by Discovery Centre staff as the cards are sold.

· Cards should be no larger than 20 cm x 20 cm.

· Cellophane bags to display cards in will be available.

· The exhibition is open to artists from Shropshire and its neighbouring counties.

Sales

All cards will be for sale with a 20% commission paid to the Discovery Centre/Shropshire County Council. The commission must be included in the price you give for each card. After the exhibition, the Discovery Centre will prepare an invoice for your sales and submit it for payment by the County Council.

Photography

Permission to photograph any artwork for publicity reasons is considered granted unless otherwise stated in writing.

Insurance

Insurance for all artwork is the responsibility of the artist. Every precaution will be taken to protect the artwork. However, Shropshire County Council accepts no liability for any damage or loss.

Want to Take Part in the Severn Project?



What is it?

The Severn Project provides and creates annual outdoor performances and events for the communities living alongside the River Severn. In 2008, we are creating two performances called Sabrina and the Engineer celebrating the River and its relationship with the Industrial Revolution. There are a number of ways you can take part, perform or help us make the event happen.

We would love to hear from people in the Bewdley and Bridgnorth areas who would like to get involved. Please see below some ways to take part.

Young People

Young People are invited to get involved in arts workshops at Bridgnorth Youth Centre, Innage Lane on 17th, 24th September and 1st October between 5.45pm and 8.30pm. If you’d like to take part all you need to do is turn up or if you’d like more information please phone Rosie Hopkins on 01746 763967.

Would you like to help us make this event happen?

In Bridgnorth and Bewdley we need people who know the towns well, are confident working with the public and free during the day of the event for training. The roles include stewarding, supporting our production teams and providing information for the public. 2008 LEAD ARTISTS

The Severn Project has been working in collaboration with selected artists over the last year to create the 2008 programme of events and to plan the future of the project. This year’s lead artists are:

AVANTI DISPLAY

Avanti Display create street theatre with shows that combine comedy, surrealism, farce and spectacle. Utilising their skills in creative engineering and their trademark of using water in unexpected ways they produce shows with dramatic, often beautiful and comic effects. They recently developed a large scale, site specific, collaborative project, Hydromania!, for the National Theatre, Trafalgar Square and Manchester Town Hall. The company has toured the length and breadth of the U.K and Europe, appeared at festivals as far afield as Korea, Noumea and Australia and have taken part in British Council tours to Thailand and China.

PA-BOOM

Pa-Boom is a collection of artists, sculptors, designers and technicians producing work, shows and projects using the medium of sculpture and theatre animated by fire, light and pyrotechnics. Previous work in Shropshire includes the breathtaking Light Horse sculpture, created with members of the community. For the Severn Project, they are collaborating with Desperate Men to realise the climax of the 2007 events in Bridgnorth in August.



EMERGENCY EXIT ARTS

Founded in 1980, Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) is an artist-centred organisation with a creative pool of performers, musicians, designers, visual artists, pyrotechnists, puppeteers, makers, composers and inventors and is led by artistic director Deb Mullins. EEA runs a large and varied programme and has become one of the UK's leading street arts companies producing unique celebratory events and community based projects.

THE PROJECT GROUP

The Project Group is an emerging social enterprise which provides a creative, progressive and entrepreneurial environment for individuals, who are in touch with Adult Mental Health Services, to achieve to their full potential at their own pace. The Project Group are creating an installation for the performances drawing on the history of the river and the communities along its banks.

Chris has over 18 years experience with assignments ranging from documentary photography in a war-torn Bosnia to powerful films made for clients that include, the BBC, Granada Media, The Department of Health and the NHS.

FAMOUS SHROPSHIRE LEGEND RECEIVES THE EPIC TREATMENT

Wild Edric is very much a localised legend in Shropshire, mainly connected with spooky appearances on the Stiperstones, and his supposed burial there, awaiting the day when he will re-appear with his soldiers to fight against evil. He has been included in children’s stories, including a graphic version, and there have been local arts projects, poetry performances and even an opera. The legend, and the historical facts upon which it is based, are worthy of comparison with the national and regional tales of King Arthur, and other freedom-fighters such as Robin Hood and Hereward the Wake.

A new book: Wild Edric: A Narrative Poem by Nigel Sustins, aims to put Edric in the same league as the better-known legendary heroes. There are many mysteries associated with the legend. Who was Godda, the ‘fairy’ woman whom he married, and where did Edric die? Is he really buried beneath the Stiperstones? Nigel Sustins’ book answers these questions by re-creating the story in the form of epic poetry: not intentionally rhyming, but carrying the narrative along at the pace, and with the vitality, of a breathless horseback ride across the landscape of South Shropshire. The poem attempts to make Edric and Godda convincingly human, and emphasises their love for each other which has potential for both heroism and tragedy.

The new version was inspired by seeing a remarkable sequence of paintings, based on the story of Edric, by Shrewsbury artist Rod Shaw, exhibited at Machynlleth (associated, of course, with another great freedom-fighter, Owain Glyndwr). One of these paintings is reproduced on the cover of the book.

The poem is commended by Gordon Dickins, writer and photographer, author of
A Literary Guide to Shropshire:

‘This beautifully written narrative poem breathes new life into the story of the eleventh century leader who fought against the Normans and lived, loved and died in that haunted area around the Stiperstones. The story is compelling, and the landscape in which this tale of honour, betrayal, loyalty and love is set lives on in the mind’s eye long after the final words. A unique work, one which deserves to be read, enjoyed and remembered.’

Community Cash Awards
Community Cash Awards are grants of up to £5,000 to help young people set up a project that will benefit their community. You just have to come up with an idea for a project that will improve life in a local community in the UK. Maybe a new basketball court, a music studio, a youth club, sex education workshops in schools, a youth advisory board, even a local magazine. Anyone who is aged 14 to 16 and is in school but struggling, or aged 16 to 25 and unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week are eligible to apply.
Projects must:
- be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25;
- clearly benefit the local community;
- benefit the people running the project;
- be a new or developing project.
The following are not eligible:
- formal groups or organisations;
- expeditions or overseas travel;
- fundraising activities for charity;
- trips and outings, unless they have educational value.
Funding of up to £1,000 is available for 14 to16 year olds and up to £5,000 is available for those aged 16 to 25.

Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust

Within the UK, the Trust makes grants to both organisations and individuals for activities that relate to:
- peace and conflict resolution;
- promoting racial justice;

The Trust tends to fund work that is on a national level and there are no maximum grant limits although the Trust does stress that budgets need to be realistic. The next deadline for applications is the 28 April 2008.

unprecedented opportunity for Shrewsbury to celebrate its famous son, under the glare of the international
spotlight. Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council has launched this Darwin Community Arts Fund to celebrate
his achievements. We are offering a wonderful opportunity for the community to get involved and deliver cultural
activities that both inspire and engage”.

Vision
We are looking for high profi le creative projects that have a wide reach within the community. Projects must be
ambitious in their scope and have the ability to deliver in scale. Successful applications must be programmed
into the bicentenary no later than October 2008.
Context
Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and was his home for the fi rst 27 years
of his life. Our Darwin is a young, enquiring mind not the hirsute, aged academic on a
ten pound note.
This is the town of his formative years and early infl uences. He attended two universities
and went on the Voyage of the Beagle whilst still a resident of the town. This is where
the mind was made.
The ideas that he committed to paper continue to resonate in all areas of society, Science,
Education, Politics, Art and Culture.
February 12, 2009 is his 200th birthday and 2009 is also the 150th anniversary of the
publication of “On the Origin of the Species”.
FUNDING
Proposals will funded up to £5,000
We are keen to encourage applicants to seek additional sources of funding to add value and scale to their
project.
APPLICATIONS
Please write a proposal describing your project in no more than two sides of A4 and include a cost breakdown
+ supporting information. The scheme is likely to be highly competitive and awards will only be given to
projects that demonstrate value for money.

Council Community Arts Strategy (See below)
4. It must be delivered within parameters stated, unless otherwise agreed by the council
5. The project should have measurable milestones which will be monitored regularly by SABC staff
6. There must not be any revenue implications for the Borough Council or its successors
What the fund cannot be used for
1. It cannot be used for a project that does not meet the main objectives of the Community Arts Strategy

2. It cannot support a private or commercial enterprise
3. It cannot be a substitute for core funding
4. It cannot be used for revenue in terms of ongoing maintenance, eg. Maintenance of equipment /open
spaces

Art buyers pay the artists direct at point of sale, by cash or cheque. Our treasurer collects details of transactions and the 15% commissions at the end of the day.

The Venue

Weston Park has a high profile in Shropshire and has a track record of staging very successful large events such as the “V” music concerts and fairs. The location of the property, close to the M54 and M6 at the very heart of England makes it accessible to large numbers of participants (“carbooters” and artists) and to the general public not only from the population centres of the West Midlands but from over a much larger radial area.

The fair will be an exciting new theme for an event at Weston Park and will be highly exclusive – pitches are by special invitation only and are available solely to private artists and exhibitors of antiques & vintage treasures.

Winning a Wesley-Barrell Craft Award will bring recognition to maker's skills - the judging panel is made up of some of the most respected and discerning names in the world of craft and design including Jon Snow - Channel 4 News anchorman, Kara O'Reilly - Associate Editor Sunday Times Style, Celia Birtwell - Textile designer, Alastair Graham - Furniture consultant, Sheryll Catto - from the Crafts Council, Helen Chislett - Journalist and Juliette Barrell - from Wesley-Barrell.


The Wesley-Barrell Craft Awards are aimed specifically at makers who are 'mid-careerists' that have been working professionally in Britain for five years.

There are two categories; Furniture and Textiles for Interiors.

As well as a cash prize of £3,000, the two winners will also benefit from a business mentoring scheme with Wesley-Barrell which will give them access to professionals from

every department including marketing, sales, accounts and IT.



Winners from each category will be announced at Origin 2008 - The London Craft Fair run by the Crafts Council at Somerset House. Winners and short-listed makers

will be showcased at the Fair following a touring exhibition of selected Wesley-Barrell stores next summer including their flagship store at 15 Wigmore Street, London.

“In 2009 Shrewsbury will at the centre of the worldwide Charles Darwin bicentenary celebrations. This is an unprecedented opportunity for Shrewsbury to celebrate its famous son, under the glare of the international spotlight. Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council has launched this Darwin Community Arts Fund to celebrate his achievements. We are offering a wonderful opportunity for the community to get involved and deliver cultural activities that both inspire and engage”.

Vision
We are looking for high profile creative projects that have a wide reach within the community. Projects must be ambitious in their scope and have the ability to deliver in scale. Successful applications must be programmed into the bicentenary no later than October 2008.



Context
Shrewsbury is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and was his home for the first 27 years of his life. Our Darwin is a young, enquiring mind not the hirsute, aged academic on a ten pound note.
This is the town of his formative years and early influences. He attended two universities and went on the Voyage of the Beagle whilst still a resident of the town. This is where the mind was made.
The ideas that he committed to paper continue to resonate in all areas of society, Science, Education, Politics, Art and Culture.
February 12, 2009 is his 200th birthday and 2009 is also the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of the Species”.




FUNDING
Proposals will funded up to £5,000 We are keen to encourage applicants to seek additional sources of funding to add value and scale to their
project.



APPLICATIONS
Please write a proposal describing your project in no more than two sides of A4 and include a cost breakdown
+ supporting information. The scheme is likely to be highly competitive and awards will only be given to projects that demonstrate value for money.



AIMS
Who can apply? Established groups or organisations, groups or organisations coming together to deliver a project, Schools, Voluntary Groups and Arts Practitioners.
What is the project? Events, Activities and Projects that celebrate Charles Darwin and his ideas.
Where must the event, project or activity take place? Within the geographical area of SABC
When can your project take place? July 2008 – December 2009



Applications must be delivered for consideration by April 11 2008
Objectives Events, Projects and Activities must address ONE of the following objectives: ¬

1 Projects related to Darwin’s life, ideas and intellectual legacy.
2 Projects that engage, stimulate and develop skills across the community.
3 Projects to support formal and informal learning.

Criteria
1 This fund is for NEW work
2 Your project must be community-led or community partnered and have local community support (a true grass roots initiative)
3 It must address one or more of the important issues identified in the Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council Community Arts Strategy (See below)
4 It must be delivered within parameters stated, unless otherwise agreed by the council
5 The project should have measurable milestones which will be monitored regularly by SABC staff
6 There must not be any revenue implications for the Borough Council or its successors

What the fund cannot be used for
1 It cannot be used for a project that does not meet the main objectives of the Community Arts Strategy (Attached)
2 It cannot support a private or commercial enterprise
3 It cannot be a substitute for core funding
4 It cannot be used for revenue in terms of ongoing maintenance, eg. Maintenance of equipment /open spaces
5 It cannot be used to offset other promised funding
6 It cannot be used for continuance of existing projects

A Fine Line & Artworks India invite applications from designer-makers in the UK to spend two months at Arts Reverie, a new centre for artists and creative professionals in a restored haveli in the old city.

Ahmedabad is a centre for traditional and contemporary craft and design, home of the National Institute of Design and the renowned Calico Museum. One of India's mega cities Ahmedabad is in a process of dynamic change, the Arts Reverie project is part of the city's cultural regeneration.

Successful applicants will receive full board and lodging, project management and networking support for up to eight weeks. Selected artists will need to find their own travel and per diem expenses.

Artists Residencies at Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Applications are now invited for the new Artists' Residency Programme. Successful artists will be based for a period of either 3 or 6 months at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University, in newly built studios designed by the award winning Thomas Heatherwick.

The residencies are open to UK visual artists in all disciplines including applied arts. The successful artists will receive studio space of c. 35 square metres, accommodation, and living expenses for the duration of their residency. The residency will be an opportunity for the artist to step away from the everyday constraints of life and experience time in which to develop individual artistic practice, and to exchange ideas in a creative atmosphere with people from other disciplines.

The selected artists will devote most of their time to pursuing their work, but the following will, by discussion with individual artists, be a part of the experience:

- An informal public talk by the artist about their practice
- Social meetings with other artists and arranged visits to other arts venues in Wales
- Open studio morning once per month by arrangement with the artist
- Open Studio exhibition of work at the end of the residency.
The possibility of the work being exhibited for a longer period in one of the Arts Centre Galleries will be discussed during the residency; as will the potential for any outreach/educational work should the artist wish it.

Up to three artists will be offered residencies at any one time. Other Units in the complex will be in use by a variety of creative businesses.

A residency will cover the following costs for the agreed period: cost of the Studio, including heating, lighting etc; accommodation arranged locally. A fixed sum for living expenses and materials will be awarded. Travel to and from Aberystwyth is borne by the artist.

The amounts currently awarded are: £100 per week living expenses to include travel during the residency period; £25 per week materials allowance.

The studios have basic furniture only. Facilities within the Arts Centre will be available by negotiation, eg. digilab equipment, darkroom, ceramics studio etc.

Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the artistic or professional excellence of the applicant's work; and the extent to which a residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre will contribute to the artist's development and be consistent with the applicant's creative goals, and professional development.

HOW TO APPLY
The first residencies will begin in June 2008. Applications are accepted at any time; selection meetings will take place 4 times a year, the first deadline being December 3rd 2007.

Following the success of the Designer Maker Art Market, for the past two years, held at Chameleon Gallery, Alan Cheeseman has now teamed up with The Crossing, St. Paul’s, Darwall Street, to provide a bigger and better location in Walsall Town Centre. It is proposed that the Designer Makers Art Market is held on the Saturday 15th December 2007. You will be able to set up your table at 8.30 am and the doors will be open to the public from 10.30am – 3.30pm.



Please e-mail your interest and a short C.V. telling me what you have done and do! And any relevant pictures that you may want to see in a press release!

The Crossing location has many benefits, for those showcasing their work. Apart from it being in a warm and undercover location, it is located between the central bus station and the main post office in Walsall town centre, lots of potential customers in this location.

The Crossing has three levels. The ground floor holds an array of shops and the 1st floor has a restaurant that draws in a crowd of people. The Crossing has toilets and wheelchair accessible lifts available. We will be holding the Designer Makers Art Market in the pleasant atmosphere of the second floor. Advertising will be provided at the front of the venue to attract people and direct them to the second floor. There will be a press release in the local newspapers and media.



If you are interested in showcasing your products/art works then forward cheques payable to Chameleon Gallery for £20.00. Please enclose a stamped and self-addressed envelope for your confirmation and receipt of payments. This will secure you a table at this exciting new venue.
